Croatia's parliament has ratified a border deal with the neighboring Slovenia that paves the way for Croatia's bid to join the European Union. The deal calls for international arbitrators to draw an Adriatic border between the two that was left unmarked after the 1991 breakup of Yugoslavia.
The EU member Slovenia blocked Croatia's attempt to join the bloc last year, insisting that the border dispute be settled first.
Slovenia wants the border to include a channel giving it access to open sea, while Croatia says it will only allow free transit through its waters.
On Friday, 129 out of 153 Croatian lawmakers supported the deal and six were against. Slovenia's parliament has not yet ratified the agreement.
