Northern Ireland police say they exchanged gunfire with suspected Irish Republican Army dissidents in the border village of Garrison, but nobody was injured.Police said Sunday that up to three gunmen opened fire late Saturday on a police patrol in the County Fermanagh village and that officers fired back. It was the first time that Northern Ireland police had come under fire since IRA dissidents whipped up a Belfast riot in July.
Police and politicians also blamed IRA dissidents for driving a car through the security barriers of the Belfast headquarters of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, a civilian panel overseeing police operations. The car was set on fire but caused no damage to the building.
