US dollar briefly falls below 1 Swiss franc

The U.S. dollar fell below the Swiss franc Wednesday for only the second time ever.

The dollar briefly dropped to 0.9993 francs in international trading before rising above parity again.

At 6 p.m. (1700 GMT) the U.S. currency stood at 1.0005 francs.

It fell below 1 franc for the first time on March 14, 2008.

The dollar's decline Wednesday came as the U.S. Federal Reserve indicated that interest rates will remain very low for a while yet and that it was not overly concerned by the U.S. currency's decline.
