Nearly 18 months after beating Spain to clinch another men's Champions Trophy field hockey title, Australia will have the added advantage this year of hosting the tournament it hopes to win for the 10th time.Australia takes on South Korea on Saturday at the State Hockey Centre, while Germany plays England and Spain takes on the Netherlands in other opening-day matches that gather the top six men's teams in the world.
Round-robin play continues to Dec. 5, with the top two teams advancing to the gold medal final on Sunday, Dec. 6.
In June 2008 at Rotterdam, Australia beat Spain 4-1 to win its ninth Champions Trophy title.
This year, teams unhappy with an umpire's ruling during the tournament can ask for a video referral of the decision as part of new regulations introduced by the International Hockey Federation.
Teams will have one referral per match on decisions relating to the awarding of goals, penalty corners and penalty strokes _ as long as the team's captain requests the review as soon as the incident takes place. If the referral goes in favor of the team requesting it, it will get another referral for the remainder of the match.
Australia veteran Jamie Dwyer, who scored one of his team's goals in the final last year, does not favor the new technology. He has played under the rule in Europe since it was introduced last year.
"I really don't think it's for our game because our game's such a quick sport and to stop-start like that I don't think it's good," Dwyer said.
Another change will see players who are green-carded by the umpires sent off for two minutes instead of just receiving a warning.
