Free agent Contreras meets with Japan's Hawks

Free agent pitcher Jose Contreras has met with officials of the Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League.

Contreras threw 50 pitches in the bullpen while being observed by Softbank scouts, the Nikkan Sports newspaper reported Friday.

The 37-year-old Cuban right-hander became a free agent earlier this month.

"I came to Japan several times as an amateur," Contreras told the Nikkan Sports. "I know they play at a very high level here and I have tremendous respect for Japanese baseball."

The former New York Yankees pitcher struggled with the Chicago White Sox in 2009, going 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA in 21 games before the Colorado Rockies acquired him on Aug. 31.

Contreras had two starts for Colorado but suffered a hamstring injury during his second. After returning, he worked 7 1/3 innings as a reliever.
