World-renowned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami was chosen in the November issue of the British "Art Review" magazine as the 17th most influential person of the year on the international art scene. At the invitation of Taiwan Land Development Corporation (TLDC) Chairman Fu Sheng Chiu, he will visit Taiwan again this December to stage his lithograph exhibition "I Make Lithographs Because I Love Lithographs" and to attend the 2009 Geisai @ Taiwan Arts Festival. After two years of communications and planning with Murakami, TLDC acquired the authorization for the staging and sales surrounding the "I Make Lithographs Because I Love Lithographs" show. Chairman Chiu said his company's basic operations concept was to use a wide variety of methods including high-technology applications, architecture, culture, and the senses of taste and touch to pass on a feeling of happiness to the public. This meant he shared the same concepts about art promotion with Murakami, whose multiple way of expressing art also hopes to move the public by offering a different slice of life.
Takashi Murakami's lithograph exhibition will take place from Dec. 5, 2009 thru Feb. 28, 2010 at the Arki Gallery at B1, No.2, Chungking South Road Section 1 in Taipei City. The digital arts center combines technology and art. It will transplant all Takashi Murakami works in their original condition from the "I Make Lithographs Because I Love Lithographs" show held in Tokyo, while TLDC will arrange the exhibition space as perfectly as possible to welcome about 80 works of art. Apart from the famous Louis Vuitton "Superflat Monogram," "Cherry" and "Flower" series, visitors will also have the opportunity to see the recent Zen-inspired "Damo." Lovers of lithograph art will experience another aspect of Takashi Murakami's creative spirit.
The artist says that making lithographs was his favorite activity during his college years. However, because of budgetary problems, he never had the chance to complete the production of his lithographs. Now, he has not only fulfilled his ideal, but he has also developed even more advanced skills to express his artistic vision. In order to satisfy the many art lovers and collectors eager to buy works by Takashi Murakami, purchases will be possible during the exhibition.
Takashi Murakami's works are well sought after on the international art market, where he has been known as Japan's "New Hope of Contemporary Art." In 2008, his work "My Lonesome Cowboy" fetched US$15.16 million on the international art auction market. His recent works "Damo" and "Dumb Compass" reveal a detailed and rich layering, though at first sight, the viewer will be impressed by the luxuriance of its color.
