Jincheng township in Taiwan's offshore Kinmen County yesterday held the first-ever Kaoliang Cultural Festival, drawing large crowds to take part in the activity unique to the locality.Kincheng township chief Tsai Hui-shih presided over the festival's opening, which featured folk dances, a traditional gong and drum troupe performance and a study seminar on sorghum - the material for producing the famous Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor.
The festival also marks the 622 anniversary of the founding of Jincheng township, where the Kinmen Kaoling Liquor Inc. is located.
The company can produce the famous liquor thanks to the sweet water springing out from a local well and the locally-produced sorghum.
More than 600 guests and visitors took part in the festival's events, including Kinmen County Magistrate Lee Chu-feng, who praised the festival as an effective and fun way to restore local traditions.
According to Tsai, now is the harvest period of sorghum - one of the major crops on Kinmen Island, which lies opposite Xiamen City in China's Fujian Province.
The main purpose of the festival was to provide the public with an opportunity to understand local resources and environment so as to more effectively promote local tourism and community development, he said.
