South Korean weightlifter Jang Mi-ran set a world record and claimed two gold medals in the women's over-75-kilogram (165-pound) division at the World Weightlifting Championships on Saturday, winning her fourth straight super heavyweight title. She heaved 187 kg (412.2 pounds) on her third and final clean and jerk, beating her previous world record set at last year's Beijing Olympics by 1 kg (2.2 pounds).
However, the world's strongest woman had to settle for silver in the snatch, behind Russia's Tatiana Kashirina. The Russian lifted 138 kg (304 pounds), while Jang managed 136 kg (300 pounds).
Jang won another gold for the best total score of 323 kg (712 pounds).
"I am pleased to win the first world championships in South Korea," Jang told reporters.
In the snatch, the bar is raised above the head in one continuous motion. The clean and jerk is a two-part lift in which the bar is first raised to shoulder level before being pushed overhead. In both lifts, the arms must be fully extended with elbows locked.
Also, Svetlana Podobedova of Kazakhstan set three world records to claim three gold medals in the women's 75-kg division.
Podobedova lifted 132 kg (291 pounds) on her third and final attempt in the snatch, beating the previous world record by 1 kg (2.2 pounds).
She also hoisted 160 kg (353 pounds) in the clean and jerk. Her combined 292 kg (644 pounds) won another gold and broke the previous record by 6 kg (13.23 pounds).
