Police say 12 people drowned and 20 others are missing after a crowded boat carrying Hindu pilgrims capsized in a river in southern India.

Local police superintendent V. Balakrishna said the boat overturned as pilgrims were crossing the Godavari River on Saturday in southern Andhra Pradesh state.

He said villagers and police in West Godavari district helped pull many pilgrims from the river and some passengers swam to safety. Rescue efforts were continuing for 20 people still unaccounted for.

The accident occurred near Narsapur Mandal, around 350 kilometers (220 miles) east of Hyderabad, the state capital.
