An appeals court has confirmed a six-month prison sentence for a Tunisian journalist known for his critical stance toward the North African country's government.

A lower court convicted Taoufik Ben Brik in November on assault charges _ which his lawyer and media advocacy group Reporters Without Borders contend were trumped-up.

The appeals ruling came Saturday.

Ben Brik has written stories critical of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali for French media including news weekly Le Nouvel Observateur. Ben Brik was detained in October _ shortly after Ben Ali won a fifth term.

Tunisia is considered relatively progressive among African nations on issues like women's rights, but is also notorious for a strict government hand on the media.
