The installation of the NASA equipment at the coastal national marine biology museum in Taiwan's southernmost county of Pingtung is part of an international cooperative project to study and monitor special features of biomass burning in Southeast Asia, long-haul transmission of pollutants, atmospheric chemicals and global climate changes, the official said.Major Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, are also taking part in the four-year research program, from 2010 to 2013.
Under the project, Taiwanese researchers, along with research teams from the U.S. and Southeast Asian countries, are collecting and monitoring background air quality data, the official said.
"This is the first time that Taiwan has joined a NASA-organized international cooperative project to monitor environmental quality in the South China Sea," said the official.
The project is expected to help upgrade Taiwan's environmental monitoring capability and documentation technology and facilitate the integration of Taiwan's environmental data into international databanks, the official said.
"The program has opened up a new era for Taiwan's participation in global environmental monitoring," the official added.
