Taiwan-native right-hander Wang Chien-ming joined the Washington Nationals spring training camp in Florida on Monday morning, marking his first appearance with the team since it signed the former Yankee to a one-year US$2 million contract including incentives that could push it up to US$3 million.

Prior to his visit to Space Coast Stadium, Wang had been working out in Arizona before he arrived in Florida Sunday evening.

Wang was seen playing catch with right-hander Jordan Zimmermann from 120 feet on flat ground. He then pitched with a windup on flat ground before stopping to watch his new teammates perform fielding drills. After the tossing, Wang then went inside to work on his upper body before doing some stretching exercises. "I am really glad that I finally made it to spring training," said Wang to Taiwan media, adding that he is looking forward to playing with his new team. "I feel better," Wang said. "I still [need to] rehab. Getting stronger and then throwing a bullpen [session]."

The Nationals believe acquiring Wang, 29, was worth the risk even though he won't be ready by Opening Day. He is still recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, and there is no timetable as to when he will pitch on a mound.

Washington is hoping that Wang will be able to pitch in a big league game by May.

"The reports on Wang are real good. His rehab is on schedule," manager Jim Riggleman said. "We are pretty far down the road as far as having him pitch in games. What remains to be seen is when we can get him on the mound and playing with a catcher. That will be determined by how he feels the next few times after he does some long tossing."

Wang himself said that he will begin his way back to the mound with mid- to long-distance tossing and some warm-ups first.

"I hope I can get back on the mound by the end of March," he added.
