Apparently, you have to possess the personality of a mad-scientist to put together the cast of "Dancing With the Stars," which returns for its 10th season (8 p.m. EDT Monday, ABC). How else would you explain the kooky concoction of twinkle-toed celebs who will be donning spandex for our viewing pleasure? We've sized up the field and have zeroed in on our five to watch.

Buzz Aldrin

Legendary astronaut

A lot of eager fans want Aldrin to attempt the moonwalk. We just want him to get through this thing without doing a face-plant. The guy is 80, after all, and someone needs to tell him that there's no defying gravity in this down-to-Earth competition. Then again, if he succeeds, it will be one small step for man, one giant leap for old dudes.

Shannen Doherty

Occasional actress

It will be interesting to see if this Hollywood bad girl can reinvent herself via reality TV and prove to America that those crazy diva days are long behind her. Our first clue should come when she gets smacked with crummy scores from the judges. Will she throw a brutal hissy fit? Will she storm off the stage? Is it so wrong to hope she does?

Kate Gosselin

Reality TV star/tabloid fodder

America's most famous octo-mom comes into the competition with a new 'do and plenty of moxie. Still, her stint on the show could be brief, simply because she has generated so many haters. But the person we really feel sorry for is pro partner Tony Dovolani - especially if Kate belittles and bosses him around like she did her former hubby.

Evan Lysacek

Champion figure skater

Our Olympic golden boy should feel right at home among all the sequins and the spangles. And as Kristi Yamaguchi so elegantly proved, figure skaters can excel on the hardwood as well as they do on the ice. But the best thing going for Lysacek in this competition? No one will question his manhood if he doesn't do a quad.

Pamela Anderson

Former "Baywatch" babe

"DWTS" represents a major challenge for the notorious sex symbol whose resume includes a short-lived sitcom called "Stacked." It marks the first time she'll need to rely more on her footwork than her upper-body assets to stand out from the crowd. Even so, the show's nervous costume designers undoubtedly will be on guard against an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction.
