Aris beats Olympiakos 2-0, AEK draws against PAOK

American forward Eddie Johnson scored twice to give Aris a 2-0 home win over Olympiakos on Wednesday in the Greek league playoffs for next season's European competitions.

Earlier, AEK and PAOK played out a 0-0 draw, with each side only creating one scoring opportunity.

After the first of the six-round playoffs, Olympiakos and PAOK have four points, Aris three and AEK two. Based on their regular season standings, Olympiakos had four points entering the playoffs, PAOK three, AEK one and Aris zero.

The winner of the playoffs will book a place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The other three will play in the Europa League.

Aris controlled the match throughout and went ahead in the 39th minute. Johnson, on loan from Fulham, headed home a cross from fellow countryman Freddy Adu, who is on loan from Portugal's Benfica.

Two minutes later, Olympiakos came close to leveling when a shot by Raul Bravo hit the post. Matt Derbyshire also hit the crossbar in the 52nd.

A minute later, Aris was awarded a penalty but goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis saved Sergio Koke's spot kick.

Seconds before the final whistle, Johnson pounced on a defensive error to score his second of the game.

On Sunday, Olympiakos hosts AEK and Aris plays at PAOK.
