Taipei, May 3 (CNA) Sogo Department Store is the latest group to join a number of businesses that are now accepting Taipei City's EasyCard as a means of payment, EasyCard Corp. said Monday.

Starting this month, the card will be acceptable for purchases of up to NT$1,000 each time at food courts, restaurants and supermarkets in Sogo's four stores in Taipei City, said a spokesman for EasyCard Corp. that issues the pre-paid card which was introduced in 2001 primarily for the payment of fares on the city's metro and bus systems.

"EasyCard Corp. is trying its best to expand the card's usage.

Consumer convenience is always our top priority, " the spokesman said, adding that the deal with Sogo Department Store was completed after months of negotiations.

Sogo Department Store is launching a month-long promotion to encourage consumers to pay for their purchases with EasyCards, the spokesman said, adding that buyers will be given some discounts and offered freebies at the Sogo stores.

EasyCard Corp is likely to reach a similar deal with Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store in the near future, the spokesman said.

Since April 1, the pre-paid cards have been accepted as payment for purchases of up to NT$1,000 each time at 25 contracted retailers islandwide, including major four convenience store chains -- 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, OK-Mart-Hi-Life-- and at Starbucks, Wellcome and Matsusei supermarkets, Pizza Hut, Watsons and Miramar Cinemas.

So far, buyers at the 25 retailers have made about 200,000 purchases a day on average with EasyCards, with each transaction valued at more than NT$60, according to the spokesman.
