The British defense secretary is urging NATO allies to do a better job explaining the importance of the Afghan mission to the public in the West and in Afghanistan. .

Speaking at a think tank in Washington, Liam Fox said the alliance needs to do "better at reminding our publics why we are fighting in Afghanistan and why the cost of failure is a price we cannot afford to pay. "

He said Wednesday that the coalition also needs to have clear messages for the Afghan people that "we are neither colonizers nor occupiers."

Fox said in prepared remarks the alliance should seek a government "by the Afghans themselves" but not "a carbon copy of western democracy."
