Organizers of Australia's Tour Down Under cycle race say they are confident seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will contest the event for the third time in January.

Armstrong has said he will be racing in the Tour de France for the last time when it starts from Rotterdam on Saturday and will otherwise compete only in selected races related to his cancer charity.

South Australian premier Mike Rann said he spoke to Armstrong on Thursday and believed the American would return to the Tour Down Under, which he has contested the last two years.
