Flooding in the Mexican Gulf coast state of Veracruz has forced thousands of people from their homes. The head of the Veracruz civil defense department says 10,000 homes were flooded or partially flooded after nearly a week of heavy rains.
Silvia Dominguez says the Panuco river is now 24 feet (7.3 meters) above flood stage.
Dominguez said about 25,000 families in Veracruz either left their homes, had their houses damaged or had their crops flooded.
She said Wednesday that temporary storm shelters had been set up with room for about 22,000 people. But many flood victims in Mexico prefer to take refuge with relatives instead of going to shelters.
