U.N. investigators say a Guatemalan drug lord imprisoned in the United States ordered the 2008 slaying of a former security adviser for Guatemala's Interior Ministry. They say drug lord Jorge "El Gordo" Paredes ordered Venezuelan-born security expert Victor Rivera killed, perhaps because Rivera failed in an attempt to negotiate the release of Paredes' kidnapped child.
Rivera was a specialist in kidnapping cases.
Chief U.N. investigator Carlos Castresana said Wednesday that Rivera's assistant apparently aided in the killing.
Castresana heads a U.N. commission responsible for battling corruption and crime in Guatemala. He leaves office next week after resigning, blaming poor cooperation from Guatemalan prosecutors.
