Taiwan shares close the highest since May

Taiwan's Taiex index rose 14.18, or 0.2 percent, to 7,798.99 at the close of Taipei trading at 1:30 p.m., the highest since May 4.

HTC Corp. (2498), the world's largest maker of handsets using operating systems from Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp., surged by the 6.9 percent daily limit to NT$570, the highest since June 9, 2008. The company's share-price estimate was raised to NT$663 from NT$571.43 by Citigroup Inc. analyst Kevin Chang, who said he expects the company to "deliver another blowout third quarter." The brokerage also said in a report yesterday the company can defend its margin in a price war with its surging volume.

Kuen Ling Machinery Refrigerating Co. (4527) jumped 6.8 percent to NT$19.75, the highest since June 25, 2007. The company is selling NT$300 million of zero coupon convertible bonds due in 2013, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

MediaTek Inc. (2454), the island's largest chip designer, fell 3.4 percent to NT$427, the lowest since July 2. MediaTek was cut to "neutral" from "outperform" by Macquarie Group Ltd. analyst Jimmy Hsu. The share-price estimate was cut to NT$440 from NT$475 by Credit Suisse Group AG and lowered to NT$380 from NT$410 at JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Realtek Semiconductor Corp. (2379 TT) slid 6.8 percent to NT$72.50, the most since June 15, 2009. The chip designer's second-quarter net income was NT$551.10 million (US$17.19 million), according to calculations by Bloomberg from figures released by the company.

Siliconware Precision Industries Co. (2325), the world's third-largest chip-packaging and testing company, retreated 3.9 percent to NT$32.20, the lowest since March 4, 2009. The company's second-quarter net income fell to NT$1.51 billion from NT$2.56 billion in the same period a year earlier.
