Marlies Schild might recover in time from knee surgery to defend her slalom title at next month's world championships, the Austrian ski federation said Sunday.

Schild was initially ruled out for three months after hurting her right knee in training for a World Cup slalom in Are, Sweden, in December.

However, the federation's Alpine sport director Hans Pum said Schild has resumed training on skis sooner than expected.

"She could make the impossible happen," Pum said.

The women's slalom, scheduled for Feb. 16, is the penultimate event at the worlds in Schladming, Austria.

Schild missed the world championships in 2009 in Val d'Isere, France, because of an injury but came back to win her first world title two years later in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Schild is a four-time World Cup slalom champion. She has won 33 races in the discipline, one short of matching Swiss standout Vreni Schneider's record.
