Taiwan's contestant loses in Asia modeling contest finale

Taipei, Feb. 18 (CNA) Although she made it to the finals, Kate Ma of Taiwan failed to win the first-ever Asia's Next Top Model contest, an adaptation of a fashion-themed reality show called America's Next Top Model. Ma, 22, and Stephanie Retuya of the Philippines lost to the winner Jessica Amornkuldilok of Thailand in the finale aired on Sunday night. In the last episode, the contestants shot a television commercial for Canon and a cover photo for a fashion magazine as well as walked a runway challenge for a Singaporean designer. Fourteen contestants from places such as China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines competed in the show's 13 episodes for the title of Asia's Next Top Model. Tyra Banks, a former world renowned model and the creator and producer of America's Next Top model, attended the runway show in the final contest. Ma has been modeling since she was 15. Her father is a Taiwanese national and her mother is Brazilian. She has worked with celebrities from Taiwan and Hong Kong in the entertainment business as well as acted in the Hong Kong movie "Summer Love Love." Winner Amornkuldilok, 27, was awarded prize money of some NT$2.4 million (US$80,800), a car, and a modeling contract. She will be the face in Canon's marketing campaign, as well as on the cover of a fashion magazine. (By Nell Shen)
