Taipei, June 23 (CNA) The ability to deal with aggressive dogs and traffic accidents are among the favored qualities sought by Chunghwa Post Co. during the recruitment of postmen, according to the state-run company. A postman needs to be physically strong, be capable of working under various weather conditions, and have the ability to deal with emergencies such as traffic accidents and dog attacks, Chunghwa Post said in a brochure providing details about its job openings, requirements and preferred qualities for each position. There have been cases of postmen in Taiwan being chased or attacked by dogs while on duty. Chunghwa Post said it also provides training for its newly recruited postmen on how to prevent or tackle dog attacks, which involves advising the postmen against throwing anything at a barking or chasing dog. This year Chunghwa Post has 1,405 job vacancies, around a third of which are postman positions, it said. The first round of the selection process involves a written examination, which was held on Saturday in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. The results of the exam will be announced on July 16. Those who pass the exam can participate in the second round, involving oral or physical tests, which is scheduled to be held in late July. Candidates for postman jobs will be required to take part in a physical test, in which they have to walk a distance of five meters carrying a postal bag weighing 30 kilograms. A candidate must complete at least four such walks within one minute to pass the exam. (By Wang Shu-feng and Elaine Hou)
