Taipei, July 29 (CNA) All pet dogs and cats in the mountainous areas around Taiwan will be subjected to anti-rabies vaccination, the director-general of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine said Monday. The vaccination, which will be provided free of charge, will begin at the end of August when the shipment of all 500,000 doses of vaccine the government has purchased are expected to have arrived in Taiwan, Chang Su-san noted. According to bureau statistics, the 12 confirmed rabies cases in Taiwan -- all Formosan ferret-badgers -- include six cases in Nantou County and two in Taitung County. Yunlin County and the cities of Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung each recorded one case, the tallies show. Currently, the free vaccination only covers dogs and cats in the mountainous areas of the cities and counties with confirmed rabies infection cases. Taiwan was taken off the non-rabies zone list right after reporting the first confirmed infection case July 17. So far, no human inflection has been reported. (By Yang Su-min and Elizabeth Hsu)
