ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) -- A spokesman for Guerrero's state government says federal authorities are investigating the killing of four municipal workers by troops who may have mistaken them for criminals.

Spokesman Jose Villanueva Manzanarez says the director and deputy director of municipal transportation, and two culture department workers, died in the shooting in the town of Arcelia, Guerrero on Friday.

Villanueva said Saturday it still wasn't clear what had happened, but that federal authorities were investigating.

Local media reported that the four victims were returning from a shooting range dressed in hunting camouflage when they were shot by troops who mistook them for criminals in a state trouble by drug violence.

In Mexico, the military has been used to combat organized crime since 2006, when then-President Felipe Calderon launch his offensive against drug cartels.
