Taipei, Dec. 9 (CNA) After discovering more than a decade ago that he has no biological relation to his adult son, a Taichung man has finally been granted a divorce from his wife, the Supreme Court said Monday. The man, surnamed Liao, was married to his wife for over 40 years. He filed for divorce more than 10 years ago after confirming that he is not the biological father of his son, who was in his 20s at the time, and demanded NT$500,000 (US$16,926) in compensation from his wife. While Liao was awarded the divorce, his wife, surnamed Hsu, was not ordered to pay compensation. Hsu denied that she abandoned her husband, claiming that she moved out ten years ago because she was the victim of domestic violence. She said that the son is a result of a rape by another man. The Supreme Court's ruling upholds a decision handed down by the Taichung branch of the Taiwan High Court, which said that the mutual trust in the couple's marriage had been damaged and that Liao had suffered great pain after learning the truth.
