Taipei, Dec. 10 (CNA) Despite the enduring popularity of tablet computers, growth of worldwide shipments could decline in 2014 on disappointment after Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system failed to spur commercial application of tablets, a market intelligence firm said Tuesday. Tablet shipments could see growth of 20 percent over next year, down from the 34 percent growth seen in 2013, WitsView predicted in a research note. The firm said it expects 190 million tablets to be shipped this year and 229 million to be shipped in 2014. "The dominant Android dampens the possibility that another operating system could lift the sales momentum," WitsView said. Prices, pushed up by high specifications, make it difficult for tablets to gain traction among consumers, it added. Citing Google's second-generation Nexus 7 as an example, WitsView said consumers care more about price than specifications, as the high-resolution tablet has performed poorly compared to lower-priced rivals. Brands will likely be forced to stir sales by cutting prices, the firm predicted. (By James Lee)
