Taipei, Dec. 14 (CNA) A Yuletide-themed amusement park brought holiday cheer to Banqiao Saturday, transforming the urban landscape in front of New Taipei City Hall into a Christmas Town that will run into the new year. Thousands swarmed into the clean, modern square despite drooping clouds and light rain to take part in child-friendly holiday fun. Children rushed to play in the variety of free amusement facilities, jumping in a bounce house, riding miniature trains and enjoying a kid-sized ferris wheel as parents busied themselves taking photos of the young ones' laughter-filled faces. The grand opening Saturday was accompanied by a street parade led by New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu, who was followed by Santa Clause, Christmas elves, fairy tale princesses and popular cartoon characters among other costumed actors. The day closed with a grand light show centered around a 35.5-meter Christmas Tree from 6-10 p.m. The children's amusement center will be open free of charge 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Jan. 2, while Merry Christmas Town decorations will be up until Jan. 5. Popular singers will hold concerts every weekend to heat up the atmosphere as the mercury drops, according to the city government. City officials have said the event, now in its third year, aims at sharing the holiday spirit of love and happiness. (By Wang Hung-kuo and Elizabeth Hsu)
