WEST BROMWICH, England (AP) -- West Bromwich Albion has fired coach Steve Clarke after the club slumped to a fourth straight loss in the English Premier League to lie just two points above the bottom three.

The Midlands club says in a statement released late Saturday, hours after a 1-0 loss to Cardiff, that the decision was made after a "disappointing performance throughout 2013."

West Brom has won seven of its 34 games over the year.

Sporting and technical director Richard Garlick says "with key games coming thick and fast, we felt it was important we acted now to give the club the best possible chance of a successful outcome this season."

Clarke's assistant, Kevin Keen, was also removed. Joint assistant head coach Keith Downing will temporarily be in control of the first team.
