ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- The left-wing main opposition party in Greece has taken a lead in a closely monitored opinion poll, as more than nine out of 10 people feel pessimistic about the state of the recession-hit country.

The opposition Syriza party led with 21.9 percent, according to an MRB tracking survey published by the news website real.gr Monday. The center-right New Democracy which heads the coalition government, followed with 21 percent.

The Dec. 2-11 survey of 2,000 people put the far-right Golden Dawn party in third place with 8.9 percent, roughly unchanged from six months ago.

It found 94 percent considered the country's situation "quite bad" or "very bad." The government, as well as many other economic forecasters, is predicting the end of the savage six-year recession in 2014.
