Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) Model and actress Lin Chi-ling was named a goodwill ambassador for Taiwan's Tourism Bureau on Monday in the hopes of boosting the number of tourists from Japan, where the popular actress enjoys a fan following. Sporting a purple sleeveless dress, Lin unveiled a 15-second commercial along with bureau officials and talked up tourist attractions ranging from the Taipei 101 skyscraper and the National Palace Museum to scenic spots like Sun Moon Lake and Alishan. Of course, she also made sure to put in a word for Taiwanese delicacies. Aside from the charm of simple street snacks, Taiwan is home to sophisticated dishes, such as the "Jadeite Cabbage with Insects" at the National Palace Museum's restaurant, Lin said. The dish, based off a famous jade work of the same name, features Chinese cabbage heart boiled in chicken and ham broth -- but no real insects. Taiwan reached its goal of 7.7 million foreign visitors this year on Dec. 21 and expects the number to climb to 7.98 million by year-end, according to Political Deputy Minister Chen Chwen-jing of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. While the number of travelers from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore increased this year, fewer visitors came from Japan than expected because of depreciation in the Japanese yen, Chen said, but he hopes that Lin's endorsement will help boost interest in Japan. Known for her pleasant demeanor and good looks, the 39-year-old has expanded her career outside of Taiwan in recent years to make a presence in China, South Korea and Japan. Her 15-second commercial, which features her showcasing scenic spots and cuisine, will air on Japanese television channels beginning April next year. Videos featuring Lin introducing local tourist spots for international travelers will be available on YouTube, Facebook and other Internet outlets in the near future, the bureau said.
