ROME (AP) -- The wife of a Kazakh dissident has arrived in Italy with her young daughter seven months after they were improperly deported back to Kazakhstan in a case that fueled tensions in Italy's fragile government.

Alma Shalabayeva and her 6-year-old daughter met with Foreign Minister Emma Bonino after arriving Friday in Rome. Bonino helped ensure their return to Italy after the Kazakh government earlier this week granted them freedom to travel.

Shalabayeva told a brief news conference that she hadn't decided if she will remain in Italy and that she looks forward to being reunited with her husband, dissident Mukhtar Ablyazov, whose whereabouts are unknown. She said her house was under constant surveillance while in Kazakhstan.

The mother and daughter were deported last May, some eight months after arriving in Italy.
