Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Economy will be the focus as well as the top priority work for the government led by President Ma Ying-jeou in 2014, as he titled his New Year message "unite the whole people to revitalize the economy." In the message, the president pledged he would push forward "flexible use of land" and "urban renewal" programs that will help drive down soaring housing prices, one of the major public grievances against the government. Ma said the government will adopt a series of economic and financial policy initiatives to encourage private investment. Toward that goal, he said government funds will be used. Other ways of boosting the economy include "positive measures" of using public investment and encouraging venture capital investment in the free economic pilot zone plan centered around the Taoyuan Aerotropolis project, according to the president. He called on the ruling and opposition parties to work together and pass as soon as possible all legislations that will help Taiwan develop its economy in a healthy way. It is time that politicians in the ruling and opposition camps gave up their "old biases" against each other and joined hands to move Taiwan forward in its effort to liberalize its economy and to boost its competitiveness, he urged.
