Chinese panda expert to check on cub at Taipei Zoo

Taipei, Jan. 1 (CNA) A panda expert from China will visit Taipei Zoo on Jan. 6 to check the health of a cub called Yuanzai that is scheduled make its public debut the same day. Zhang Hemin, director of the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda, will examine Yuanzai to see how she has been growing, the zoo said Wednesday. China's most authoritative panda expert, Zhang visited Taiwan in 2008 to prepare for the arrival of Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, a pair of giant pandas that China gave Taiwan. He also helped with the breeding efforts, which produced the cub after four years of artificial insemination attempts. At 179 days old, the panda cub weighed 13.7 kilograms on Wednesday.
