LONDON (AP) -- English referee Mark Clattenburg has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Football Association after being accused by Southampton of insulting Adam Lallana during a Premier League match.

The FA released a statement Monday saying Clattenburg's comments "do not constitute misconduct" under the governing body's rules and that it will "not be taking any further action in relation to this matter."

Clattenburg, who is one of the FIFA candidates to referee at this year's World Cup in Brazil, apparently said that Lallana's attitude had changed since he started playing for England.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited, which is in charge of top-flight referees in England, said Friday that Clattenburg has no case to answer in relation to the incident, which occurred in Southampton's match against Everton on Dec. 29.
