European Union official accuses British government of peddling immigration 'myths'

LONDON (AP) -- A senior European official has accused the British government of stirring up unfounded fears about immigration.

EU Commission Vice President Viviane Reding says the British government is using a "supposed invasion of foreigners" to distract attention from the country's real problems.

She said: "Most of the things which are told to the people in Great Britain are myths, have nothing to do with reality."

Britain's Conservative-led government -- threatened electorally by an anti-EU party -- has used increasingly tough rhetoric about migrants, especially those from eastern Europe.

It has proposed limiting new arrivals' access to welfare benefits and charging migrants for some health services.

Conservative lawmaker Mark Reckless on Friday accused Reding of using heated rhetoric over Britain's "quite moderate" immigration measures.
