Taipei, Jan. 15 (CNA) A series of earthquakes struck Taiwan early Wednesday, with the biggest of them measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, according to Central Weather Bureau data. Three of the earthquakes hit in Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan at 2:38 a.m., 3:50 a.m. and 7:06 a.m. and had magnitudes of 4.8, 4.7 and 4.3, respectively. The tremors were related to each other but did not represent abnormal underground movement, the bureau said. No damage or injuries were reported. The highest level of intensity of any of the quakes was felt in Taitung's Chulu Ranch, which recorded a 5 on Taiwan's 0-7 seismic intensity scale. Intensity measures the actual strength of shaking in a particular location. Two other isolated earthquakes were recorded Wednesday morning. A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hit Nantou County in central Taiwan at 0:44 a.m., while a magnitude 3.2 temblor jolted eastern Taiwan's Hualien County, bureau data showed. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
