MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Longtime World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman has died at 82.

Sulaiman's son, Mauricio Sulaiman, said the man who raised the profile of the sport in his four-decade leadership died Thursday at a hospital in Los Angeles. He had been hospitalized for months for a heart condition.

The council confirmed his death, calling him the "father of boxing." Sulaiman was a member of boxing's Hall of Fame since 2006. He created many new rules for the sport to protect the fighters
