Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) Taiwanese flat-panel television contract maker Amtran Technology Co. expects to make a sales breakthrough during its 10th anniversary year this year after shifting its focus to TV production, company chairman Alpha Wu said Friday. Amtran Technology, which makes TVs for major U.S. television brand Vizio, had sales of NT$29.5 billion (US$976.59 million) last year, while shipping 3 million TVs, 3 million LCD monitors and 200,000 stereos, Wu said at a year-end party for the company's employees. The North American market accounted for more than 50 percent of the company's revenues, he said. During the party, Wu paid special tribute to Vizio CEO and founder William Wang, a Taiwanese-born American entrepreneur, and stressed that the two would continue their partnership in the future. In the domestic market, Amtran Technology sold nearly 90,000 TVs, including 20,000 sold during a promotion it launched with Hotai Motor Co. that gave free TVs to new car buyers, according to Amtran Chief Financial Officer Scottie Chiu. The company hopes that its global shipments of TVs and liquid-crystal display (LCD) products will remain at least at the same level of last year but that profits will rise because of the launch of items with bigger screen sizes, Chiu said. He said he expected that the company's shipments of stereos would double this year from last year's 200,000. (By Pan Chi-i and Y.L. Kao)
