Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Jan. 27 (CNA) Outgoing Honduran President Porfirio Lobo said Sunday that relations between his country and the Republic of China will remain unchanged under the new Honduran government. Lobo gave ROC President Ma Ying-jeou that assurance upon Ma's arrival at Palmerola military airport for the inauguration of Honduran President-elect Juan Orlando Hernandez on Monday. As Hernandez is from the current ruling party, his administration is expected to uphold his country's current foreign policy and maintain steady ties with Taiwan, Lobo was quoted as saying during his meeting with Ma in the airport's VIP lounge. For his part, Ma said it is his third visit to Honduras. His first trip to the Central American country was during his tenure as Taipei mayor and his second visit was four years ago when he attended Lobo's presidential inauguration. "I've come again to attend the inauguration of a new Honduras president and bear witness to the steady and solid relationship between our two countries," Ma told Lobo. Lobo assumed office at a time when Honduras was encountering difficulties, Ma said, adding that he admires Lobo's achievements in improving the situation in the country over the past four years. Lobo led a delegation to the ROC's Double Ten National Day celebrations last October. He and Ma also met in Vatican City when they attended Pope Francis' inaugural mass last March. Ma said he appreciates Lobo's efforts to strengthen ROC-Honduras relations during his tenure in office. The president and his entourage began their current diplomatic tour Jan. 23, visiting two of the ROC's African allies -- Sao Tome and Principe and Burkina Faso -- on the first leg. They are scheduled to return to Taiwan Jan. 30, the eve of the Lunar New Year. (By Kelven Huang and Sofia Wu)
