Vice-minister of the Interior Hsiao Chia-chi said Tuesday that the ministry has decided not to appeal the judgment of the Taichung High Administrative Court regarding a suit by the four families whose residences and a place of business were leveled by the Miaoli County Government to make way for an access road in a planned scientific park.

The decision by the Taichung court, announced on January 3, reversed the verdict of a lower court and effectively ruled that the decision to tear down the residences and a pharmacy was illegal,

The Interior Ministry had said previously that it would decide whether to appeal the High Court ruling before the break for the Lunar New Year. Vice-minister Hsiao said in an afternoon press conference that the ministry’s decision was made in an attempt to help resolve the differences between the families and the local government. The ministry also said that no administrative sanctions would be meted out in the case.

Informed of the decision, a spokesperson for the Miaoli County Government said that it will handle matters in accordance with the instructions of the court.
