DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Italy's prime minister is holding talks with senior officials in the United Arab Emirates during a visit to the Gulf nation aimed at boosting ties and strengthening economic cooperation.

Emirati state news agency WAM says Premier Enrico Letta met with the Abu Dhabi crown prince, Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, after his arrival Saturday. The news agency says they discussed areas of "joint cooperation in areas of economy, trade and investment."

The crown prince plays a key role in the UAE leadership and is the half-brother of Emirati President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is recovering from a recent stroke.

Letta is also expected to meet the UAE prime minister and other officials before traveling to the nearby Gulf states of Qatar and Kuwait.
