Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) Changhua County is planning to launch its own bicycle rental system in July to help students commute and boost local tourism, according to Changhua County Magistrate Cho Po-yuan. To demonstrate the county's resolve to create the new system, Cho inked a cooperative agreement last month with King Liu, chairman of leading bicycle maker Giant Manufacturing, on building the new network. Cho said he began to realize the enormous potential of the bicycle sector during a trip to Europe and decided to float the idea of establishing a public bicycle rental network in the county. "How can Changhua County lag behind other localities in developing such a system, given the county's population of more than 1 million people and the popularity of such a system?" Cho asked. The county government has therefore promoted its own version of Taipei's "YouBike" rental system, which will also advance the county's goals of conserving energy and reducing carbon emissions, Cho said. The county intends to set up 30 rental stations with a total of 750 bicycles by July, focusing first on locations within Changhua City, such as the train station, the county government building, the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Chung Shan Elementary School, Changhua Yanping Park and the Changhua County Police Bureau, according to Cho. The YouBike system will then be expanded gradually to other areas, with an average distance of 400-1,000 meters planned between each rental station, Cho said. Another of the county's bicycle-related plans, Cho said, is to set up a bicycle industrial park zone in Dacun Township because Changhua is home to 664 bicycle components manufacturers, roughly 70 percent of the country's total.
