TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb 12, 2014--Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) today announced the launch of nearline enterprise capacity HDDs with a 5TB recording capacity, the industry's largest for models that are not filled with helium gas. Sample shipping of the MG04 series will start in the late half of February. The SAS MG04SCA and SATA MG04ACA series, both with an interface speed of 6Gbit/s, will be available in the 3.5-inch form factor.

The new series uses 1TB/platter (max) magnetic disks to realize a capacity of 5TB and achieve an internal data transfer rate of 205MiB/s, 24% faster than Toshiba's current models, MG03SCA400 and MG03ACA400 (4TB, 165MiB/s). The series is engineered for the high-capacity demands of mid-tier servers and cloud application workloads, and for capacity-optimized data center storage systems that benefit from high capacity per spindle.
System builders have the option of selecting a Sanitize Devise Feature set function for each model, which makes it possible to invalidate important data recorded on the magnetic disks at a blink. The series also provides, as an option, persistent write cache technologies that help protect against data-loss in the event of sudden power loss.
The new products are also halogen- and antimony-free and RoHS compatible .
Notes Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a gigabyte (GB) as 1,000,000,000 bytes and a terabyte (TB) as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 2 30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary. Toshiba survey as of February 13, 2014 Toshiba Semiconductor & Storage Products Company defines halogen-free and antimony-free hard disk drive products as those meeting all of the following requirements: (a) containing bromine (Br) and chlorine (Cl) at no more than 900 parts per million (ppm) by weight for each element, and containing bromine and chlorine in an aggregate amount not exceeding 1500 ppm by weight; and (b) containing no more than 1000 ppm antimony (Sb) by weight. For the avoidance of doubt, Halogen-Free/Antimony-Free SSD or HDD products may not be entirely free of bromine, chlorine, or antimony, and may contain other element of the halogen family. Toshiba Semiconductor & Storage Products Company defines "RoHS Directive" as the Directive 2011/65/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 2011 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
1MiB (mebibyte)=1,048,576B(2 20 ) Energy Consumption Efficiency: Energy consumption efficiency is calculated based on power consumption divided by formatted capacity, as defined by Japanese law
