KMT Honorary Chairman Lien Chan departed Taiwan Monday on a visit to Beijing, where he is expected to meet CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People Tuesday afternoon in what is being billed as the “Second time Lien-Xi Meeting."

Lien is leading a delegation of 80 people and is also scheduled to meet Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) Director Zhang Zhijun for a ‘coffee break’ on Tuesday. The group will be given a briefing on planning and rural development in the morning and will be feted by CPC Party Secretary Guo Jinlong for lunch, after which Lien will meet Xi Jinping and participate in a symposium led by Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the CPPCC. Wednesday morning Lien will be named an Honorary Professor at Beijing University, and on Thursday he will travel to Shenyang to pay homage at the tombs of his ancestors.

Lien's office says that he hopes to accomplish a few things for friends and compatriots on both sides of the strait in a limited amount of time. He emphasizes that there is no political mandate for this trip and that it is purely a cross-strait civilian exchange.
