Taipei, Feb. 19 (CNA) Taiwan will open its doors wider to visitors from China in the first half of this year, the Tourism Bureau said Wednesday.

The limit of 3,000 independent Chinese travelers entering the country per day is expected to be raised to 4,000 people by May, the bureau said.

An independent tourist refers to one who comes outside of a tour group.

In addition the number boost, Taiwan also plans to open up to independent travelers from more Chinese cities outside of the 26 that are already allowed.

The plan to ease restrictions on independent Chinese travelers was prompted by a surge in Chinese visitors during the Lunar New Year holiday early this month, alongside numbers that showed an increase of Chinese visitors to 2.87 million in 2013, the bureau said. (By Angela Tsai and Elizabeth Hsu)
