Taipei, Feb. 20 (CNA) Tourists were jubilant to see snow on the ground Thursday at Alishan National Scenic Area in southern Taiwan, the popular tourist spot's first "real snow" in almost nine years. Visitors from both Taiwan and abroad took pictures of the snow that fell overnight as temperatures dipped under the influence of a cold snap. The thin layer of white powder on the ground is expected to disappear during the day, however, as the weather becomes dry and sunny. There was some flurry a month ago at the scenic area, at just over 2,000 meters above sea level, but no accumulation on the ground. Waves of cold and wet weather since the beginning of the year have also brought snow to other mountains where snow is not a regular winter phenomenon, including Hehuanshan in central Taiwan and Taipingshan in the northeastern county of Yilan.
