Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) Sean Lien, son of former Vice President Lien Chan, on Monday announced his intention to run for mayor of Taipei in November, vowing to make helping the underprivileged a top priority. If elected, he said he will donate all of his salary and will continue the donations to charity groups he and his wife have made over the years. He also pledged to balance the development of the various districts in the city of 2.6 million residents.

Lien, 44, made the long-expected formal announcement at Taipei Circle in the city's historic Tatung district, a stronghold of the pan-green camp consisting of the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the smaller Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU). The member of the Kuomintang (KMT) central committee will have to compete with veteran lawmakers Tsai Cheng-yuan and Ting Shou-chung for the ruling party's nomination. The KMT is expected to complete the nomination process by the end of May at the latest. (By Kelven Huang and Jay Chen)
