As shakeups continue to rumble in Jiang Yi-huah’s cabinet, the Executive Yuan announced Tuesday night that Lee Hong-yuan will be stepping down as Interior Minister. Premier Jiang reportedly offered Lee a post as a minister without portfolio but Lee turned it down.

Lee told reporters that he was not informed of the decision until Tuesday afternoon and said that he did not have anything to say on the move. He downplayed the Executive Yuan’s somewhat offhanded handling of the announcement at a late hour and said that government officials come and go all the time, so he was not upset at the news.

Rumors that Lee wanted to resign have circulated over the past few months as the ministry has hit turbulence with controversies like the dismantling of illegal structures in the Qingjing area and problems with new software for the ministry’s household registration system.

Outsiders are saying that Lee resigned because he felt he did not fit in with the cabinet of Premier Jiang and his subordinates. Lee declined to go into detail about why he was not satisfied with things in the cabinet, however, and asked people not to speculate on his reasons for going.

Lee did explain that he turned down the offer of a position as minister without portfolio because he has already made plan for the next stage in his life. He said he had left the academic world to take the MOI post and is happy to leave government work and politics behind and return to academia.
