Interior Minister Lee Hong-huan will resign after he turned down an offer by President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Jiang Yi-huah to be appointed as a minister without portfolio, Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said late Monday.

Lee said that he would prefer to return to college campus as a professor if he could not keep his current post.

Lee, a hydraulic expert, had been a professor at National Taiwan University before serving as the head of Public Construction Commission between April. 1 2011 and Feb. 5, 2012.

He was named interior minister on Feb. 6, 2012.

Sun said the premier has urged Lee to "give it a second thought" and tell the premier about his decision if he changes his mind by mid-night.

Lee could not be reached for comments by press time.
